A system of symbols indicates the type of improvement of all the roads and whether the work was done with or without the assistance of the Federal Government. Sheets are of uniform size, some States requiring 2 or more, and are so issued that they may be punched and put in a loose-leaf atlas. The maps are called progress maps, and the series will be issued periodically to show any change in improvement of the highways.
