A system of symbols indicates the general type of improvement of all the roads and whether the work was done with or without the assistanee of the Federal Government. Sheets are of uniform size, 21½ × 31 inches, some States requiring 2 or more, and are printed with the longer dimension either east and west or north and south to permit coverage of a State with a minimum number of sheets. The seale is 1:500 000 for the Eastern States and 1:760,320 for the 11 Western States. The maps are called progress maps. and are periodically revised and reprinted to show changes in improvement of the highways. As the transportation maps for each State become available, publication of progress maps for that State is discontinued.
